The Saturday blending counter at Reed Vault Gate started because customers kept asking the same question: which oil should I add to the diffuser base? After four years of watching people build blends at the counter, we have a clear sense of what works for beginners and what tends to go wrong.
Start with a single note, not a blend ¶
The most common beginner mistake is trying to blend three or four oils on the first attempt. The result is usually a scent that is hard to identify and harder to recreate. Start with one oil. Yuzu, hinoki, or lavender are good entry points because they are distinct and pleasant on their own. Live with it for a week. Then, if you want to add complexity, introduce a second oil at a low ratio (around 20% of the total) and see how it changes the character.
How viscosity affects diffusion ¶
Reed diffusers work by capillary action. The reeds draw the liquid up from the reservoir and release it into the air. Thicker oils diffuse more slowly; thinner oils diffuse faster and run out sooner. The base oil we stock is formulated to have a viscosity that works well with standard rattan reeds. If you add a very thick essential oil (vetiver is the most common example) at a high ratio, it can slow diffusion noticeably. A ratio of 10-15% essential oil to base is a good starting point.
The oils we currently stock and what they smell like ¶
Yuzu: bright, citrus, slightly floral. Sudachi: sharper and greener than yuzu, more like a lime. Hinoki cypress: woody, clean, faintly medicinal in a pleasant way. The smell of a new wooden building. Lavender (Hokkaido): softer and less sharp than French lavender, with a slight herbal note. Vetiver (Osaka importer): earthy, smoky, grounding. These are the current selection; it changes with the season and the availability from our suppliers.
Caring for your diffuser between refills ¶
When the reservoir is empty, rinse it with a small amount of isopropyl alcohol before refilling with a new blend. This prevents the old scent from muddying the new one. Replace the reeds every two to three refills. They become saturated and stop wicking effectively. Flip the reeds once a week to refresh the scent throw. Keep the diffuser away from direct sunlight and air conditioning vents, both of which accelerate evaporation.
